[ Lannister gold, it seems, can run out. When your family is in turn no longer welcome at The Rock. And then exiled to Dorne. A land not exactly fond of Lannisters but then it was a kinder punishment compared to what could've happened when her father's ties to the King of Dorne were brought into question. Her father had always been a generous man and had given help to all Seven Kingdoms. However, his help of certain ones was frowned upon and when he refused to stop, he was cut off from such riches and sent away.
It was only due to his loyal service and giving nature to all that he was spared and not deemed a traitor. Instead, just given the title of "fool". The Dornish, however, welcomed them with open arms when they found out who he was. A banquet thrown in his honor and all of them given rooms at the palace as guests.
Karen was still reeling from it all, missing the shore and cool ocean breezes. She also wasn't too sure of the fashion here, either. But she was dressed in red and green, gold hair pulled back and flowing down her bare back. She smiled and was polite to those that addressed her but she didn't feel much like starting those conversations herself. She nibbled at some food, drank the wine (it was quite good), but she couldn't help wondering what this meant for her now. Any hopes she had of marrying someone in higher standing was uncertain and she didn't feel all that comfortable with the... ways of the Dornish. How marriage and taking lovers was treated the same. And how freely such "love" was demonstrated in front of the court. ]
[ It's a few days later that Frank calls again, this time to invite her for a ride. The horse itself is a lovely beast. Lovelier than anything she had seen at the Rock. She pets its neck and gently touches the nose. It leans and pushes into her touch.
The grin comes unbidden and she looks over at Frank, ]
[ New semester, new schedule to get used to. Clean slate in a way. No boyfriend now, just one more year and she would be heading to the Big City itself. Yet one thing never changed: she always enjoyed meeting up with her friends on the grass, sitting in a circle to either study, eat, or just talk shit about their new syllabuses.
But this time, she keeps hearing someone... singing? Or trying to.
Eventually, it gets to be too much and while her friends are content to snicker about it, Karen has always been the firey one in the group to go speak her mind. So up she gets and off she goes. Her friends try to call her back but she strides right over to the guy under the tree, strumming his guitar, playing the part of a hipster pretty damn well. She crosses her arms when she gets in front of him, clearing her throat before he can start singing again. ]
What's it going to take to make you stop torturing that guitar?
[ When Karen woke up a few hours later, she already knew she'd be missing her first class. She was too damn hungover to even try to rush. She also noticed the bed was empty now. A part of her was, surprisingly, genuinely disappointed about that. Not that she allowed herself to feel that way for long.
It was only going to be the one time.
As she would later tell Misty when the other woman stopped by the apartment after Karen got her shower, 'The moment I heard he was going to be a Marine, I knew there wasn't going to be anything more than a date.' Misty knew before she even confirmed. Knew about the risks that would come with dating someone like that and knew that Karen was done putting herself out on a limb when it could result in loss.
Not something she expected that Frank guy to know. It had taken months for Misty and Colleen to know, for Karen to feel comfortable enough with them to open up about it all. After that, they both understood why she was so reluctant to get attached to anyone. It's why they invited her to their own family gatherings come the holidays.
But she makes it a point not to think of Frank as she goes about her day, heads back to the apartment after classes. Changes her sheets and takes the tape out of the stereo. The leftovers are eaten in front of the television and she continues on the day after that and the day after that. She makes sure to eat lunch somewhere else during those days. Which is easy when she buries herself in the next wave of papers assigned to her.
If she's not in classes, she's in the university library. ]

He was good at reading people and she was pretty bad at hiding her own emotions when it really got to her. She had asked if he really needed to or if he just felt he had to. She knew no matter the answer, there wasn't anything she could say to make him stay.
Just like all the others that had left, too.
She wished him luck and offered him her hand, resisting the urge to move forward and embrace him like she had wanted to.
She'd let him go.
On this night, she had tried to sleep and couldn't. She decided to get up and work instead, at least try to be productive with the time she was up. Dressed in nothing but her underwear and a baggy t-shirt, she flips through a file before going back to typing, stopping only when she hears the knock at her door. Starting at the sudden noise, she freezes and frowns over at the door. Slowly, she gets up from her chair and grabs her gun before going over. She doesn't have the fancy kind of tech that lets her see through the door so she has to chance looking through a regular peephole.
She doesn't really believe it at first. What the hell is he doing here...?
There's a long moment she pauses and debates if it really is him or someone else in his body... But ultimately opens the door enough to look out, keeping the chain on the door for the moment. ]
[ It had been a week since she took her desk at the new Nelson, Murdock, & Page. Karen was still on good terms with the Bulletin and sometimes spent her lunch going over to say "hello", keep her ear to the ground for any stories popping up. Sometimes she would even swing by to see Sister Maggie. Her heart still ached for the Father but she was going to make sure his sacrifice was worth it. She was going to continue to help Matt and Foggy save Hell's Kitchen.
They could do it together.
Especially now that those walls were gone. All of them were on the same page now and while that was... different, it was a good kind of different. They had been through the gauntlet and they had come out on the other side again, still whole. If a little beaten. Matt's bruises took a long time to heal but at least this time Karen knew how he got them and... felt pride this time.
After a week of working in the office with him again, she leans against the doorframe of his office, ]
